Glacier snowmobiling from Reykjavík

A super jeep or monster truck collects you in Reykjavík and drives straight to Langjökull for a one-hour snowmobile ride, sharing each machine with one other person. Pick it if you've seen the Golden Circle already and want a smaller group than the big coach tours.

Glacier Snowmobiling from Reykjavik

About this experience

Snowmobile.is is the snowmobile brand of Arctic Adventures, and this is its plain day trip: no Golden Circle programme, just the glacier. A super jeep or monster truck picks you up from 10:00, drives out past Þingvellir and Geysir (you see them from the window, maybe Strokkur going off), stops at the equipment centre for suits and helmets, then grinds up the track to the base camp at Geldingafell. Guests report about two and a half hours from the city to base camp.

On the ice you get the usual one hour on a shared snowmobile, with guides riding alongside the line. One guest clocked 30 to 40 km/h on average with a few faster bursts. The group is the selling point: 16 people at most, against 50 on the coach tours, which means less waiting at the photo stop and a more personal driver-guide.

Lunch isn't included. The jeep stops where you can buy food, or you bring a packed lunch, which most guests recommend. The day runs about eight hours. The weather caveat applies here too: a 3-star review from March 2025 rode in rain with zero visibility and wished the tour had been moved. If the forecast is bad, call the operator the day before.

What guests say

★★★★★

Although a bit apprehensive I quickly got the hang of controlling our mobile as we drove in line through some of the most beautiful artic scenery. Mobiles are easier to steer at a decent speed and we averaged 30/40kmph.

★★★★★

It was a 10 hour round trip on and off the glacier with about an hour's actual riding. After a tentative start I really got the hang of it and by the end I was racing over the snow like an expert, almost.

★★★★★

Operating the snowmobile is easy and they have guides riding around you in case you should need any help. The glacier is breathtaking and it’s just the right amount of time.

Tips before you book

  • Pack lunch and snacks. The food stop is short and there's nothing on the glacier.
  • Earplugs help: a reviewer called the super jeep "very noisy" on its big tyres.
  • If nobody in your pair has a licence, Arctic Adventures charges for a guide to drive you. Settle it when you book, not at base camp.
  • Choose a bus stop close to your hotel and be there on time. The jeep waits only briefly.
  • Weigh this against the Golden Circle combo: $44 more buys the three classic sights, but in a group of up to 50.
