Snowmobiling Langjökull, winter 2026-27

From November the days on the ice cap shrink to about four hours of sun. Here is how that shapes the departure you pick, the odds of a cancellation and how far ahead to book.

Every snowmobile tour on Langjökull runs all year, and winter is when most people want to go: real snow, low golden light, a glacier that looks the way the brochures promise. It is also the season of short days, closed roads and rides called off at the last minute.

This post covers what we know for the 2026-27 winter as of 30 October 2026: how much light you get, which start time to choose, what happens when the weather turns, and when to lock in your date.

The quick answer

Reykjavík gets about 6.5 hours of daylight in mid November, 4 hours 7 minutes at the December solstice and 7 hours by 1 February. In December take the earliest departure you can: the 12:00 slot from Gullfoss, not the 14:00. Storms cancel rides, sometimes after you set off; you get a new date or a refund, and every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours before. No snowmobile tour on our list includes a northern lights hunt.

How much daylight is there for snowmobiling in winter 2026-27?

Very little in December: the sun rises at about 11:20 and sets at about 15:30 in Reykjavík. By March you have more than ten hours.

The times below are calculated for Reykjavík, in Icelandic time (Iceland stays on UTC all year, so there is no clock change). timeanddate.com has the minute-by-minute table for any date. The glacier sits inland and a little further east, so sunrise and sunset there come a few minutes earlier, and the mountains around the base camps can hide a low sun.

Civil twilight adds about an hour of usable light at each end. That is why a guest on a December super-jeep trip wrote that they "travelled inland in darkness with the longest sunrise" they had ever seen. The sun barely climbs, and it stays low and orange for hours. Photographers love it. Riders with cold fingers love it less.

Which departure time should you book in December and January?

The earliest one that fits. From Gullfoss that means the 12:00 ride; from Reykjavík, the morning pickups that reach the ice around midday.

Mountaineers of Iceland lists departures from Gullfoss at 12:00 and 14:00 for the ride from Gullfoss. Add 40 to 60 minutes in the super truck to their base camp, then gearing up, then the hour on the sled. On a 14:00 departure in December you ride in the last of the twilight and come down to Gullfoss in the dark, with a two-hour drive back to Reykjavík still ahead.

The full-day trips from Reykjavík are timed around the light already. The Golden Circle snowmobile day leaves at 9:00, the super-jeep trip from Reykjavík picks up at 10:00, and guests on the ice cave day report a 7:30 pickup. You leave in the dark either way. The difference is that someone else is driving.

How often are winter snowmobile tours cancelled?

Often enough to plan for it. Storms close the ice and the highland tracks, sometimes after you have left Reykjavík. You get a new date or a refund.

The operators decide on the day, and they do not always know at breakfast. A March 2026 guest on the ice cave day wrote that the tour was cancelled for weather and that they were not told "until after getting up very early and waiting at the bus stop". Sleipnir's listing says tours can be cancelled "with sometimes short notice" and offers alternative dates or a full refund.

A cancellation on a warning day is good news. In January 2020, 39 people on a snowmobile tour were rescued from Langjökull in a storm after the Met Office had issued warnings, as the Reykjavík Grapevine reported. The industry has been stricter since. Watch the colour-coded warnings on vedur.is in the days before your trip.

Our advice: book the glacier early in your trip, not on your last day. One December 2024 guest had a super-jeep tour cancelled for "bad weather and horrible driving conditions", got a new day, and summed it up: "you need to be flexible during winter because the weather is so unpredictable". Every tour on this site cancels for free up to 24 hours before. The season and weather guide has more on the odds month by month.

Can you see the northern lights on a Langjökull snowmobile tour?

Not as part of the plan. Every snowmobile tour on our list runs in daylight, and none of the listings includes an aurora stop.

We checked all eleven listings: none promises the northern lights. Sometimes the sky helps anyway. A guest on the snowmobile and Secret Lagoon day in December 2024 wrote that the guide "even stopped when we saw the northern lights as an added bonus!" That was the drive home after dark, not the ride.

If you want both, book them on different evenings. Mountaineers of Iceland sells a separate 3 to 4-hour Northern Lights Hunt by super jeep from Reykjavík on its own site. Do not stack an aurora tour on the same night as a full glacier day. One guest on the Golden Circle trip came back from the mountain at 7:30 p.m., went straight to a 10 p.m. aurora pickup, and had not eaten since lunch.

When should you book a snowmobile tour for December to March?

Christmas and New Year: as soon as your flights are fixed. February: three to four weeks ahead. Free cancellation means booking early costs you nothing.

Small-group tours fill first. The super-jeep trip from Reykjavík takes 16 people at most and the Glacier Rush just 10. The big trucks out of Gullfoss carry more, so the ride from Gullfoss is usually the easiest date to find at short notice.

For 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, the operators' calendars are the only reliable source: pick the exact date on the listing before you plan the rest of the day around it. Iceland celebrates on the evening of 24 December, so expect early closing in town that night. Prices and what each ticket covers are in our price guide, and what to wear matters more in January than at any other time.
