Langjökull snowmobile prices

An hour on a snowmobile on Iceland's second-largest ice cap is not cheap. Here is where the money goes, what the from-price leaves out and which tour gives you the most time with your thumb on the throttle.

A snowmobile tour on Langjökull costs between $251 and $433 per person on Viator in 2026. The ride itself is much the same on all of them: about an hour on the ice on most tours (about 40 minutes on the tunnel combo), two people to a sled, in a line behind a guide. What changes the price is everything around that hour. Who drives you to the glacier, which Golden Circle stops you see on the way, and whether a hot pool or an ice cave is bolted on.

The prices below are the Viator from-prices checked on 30 October 2026, set next to the kroner prices the operators publish on their own sites. Two things catch people out at the base camp: the from-price is per person on a shared sled, and riding alone costs extra.

The quick answer

Meet the tour at Gullfoss and you pay from $251; at Geysir from $262. With pickup in Reykjavík it is $317 to $433, and the Into the Glacier combo from Húsafell is $314. The ride is about an hour on most tours, about 40 minutes on the tunnel combo. Every price assumes two people sharing one snowmobile, so you drive for about half of it. A solo sled costs roughly ISK 6,000 to 10,000 more (about $50 to $80), and a staff driver for guests without a licence costs far more.

How much does a snowmobile tour on Langjökull cost in 2026?

From $251 per person if you meet the tour at Gullfoss, and $317 to $433 with pickup in Reykjavík. The ride is about an hour on most tours, about 40 minutes on the tunnel combo.

Every snowmobile tour on this site, cheapest first. Trip length counts the drive, the truck ride to base camp, the briefing and the gear, so it tells you little about the riding.

Is the price per person or per snowmobile?

Per person, with two people sharing one snowmobile. One drives, one sits behind, and you swap at the halfway stop.

Every listing says it in the small print: "Please note the price is per person and there are 2 passengers per snowmobile." Mountaineers of Iceland splits its hour into 20 to 25 minutes out, a stop of about 10 minutes and 20 to 25 minutes back. Swap at the stop and each of you drives for roughly 25 minutes.

This is where most bad reviews start. One couple on the Gullfoss tour wrote that they thought they had booked two solo riders; at the glacier they learned every booking was shared, and the upgrade was "an additional 80 USD per person". Read the line before you pay, and decide at home whether you want a sled each.

How much does it cost to ride a snowmobile alone?

Roughly ISK 6,000 to 10,000 extra, about $50 to $80. Arctic Adventures charges ISK 10,000 on most tours; guests on Mountaineers of Iceland tours report about $80.

  • Arctic Adventures and Snowmobile.is (the Geysir and Reykjavík tours): ISK 10,000 per solo rider, which also applies when your group has an odd number of people. On the ice cave tour from Reykjavík the supplement is ISK 6,000.
  • Mountaineers of Iceland (Gullfoss, super jeep, Secret Lagoon, Glacier Rush): the single-rider option is added when you book. Guests report about $80 per person.
  • The Into the Glacier combo: a single rider can only be added on site, if a sled is free. One guest in October 2026 paid "an additional 80 at the base camp".
  • Reykjavik Excursions (the Golden Circle coach day): built for two per sled. A guest who wanted to ride alone was told "you have to do it thru another tour to do solo".

The solo fee is the best money most couples never spend. You get the full hour of driving for about a third more than the shared seat. More on who can drive in the licence and age guide.

What is not included in the price?

Food, the solo upgrade, a staff driver if nobody in your party has a licence, tips and any video. On self-drive tours, also the car and the fuel.

  • Food: no snowmobile tour here includes lunch. Reykjavík pickup days stop at a café; the Gullfoss tour has no food at base camp. One family's tip: "Worth taking drinks and snacks as roughly an hour to the base camp and back again."
  • A staff driver: listed as an exclusion on the Gullfoss, Geysir, Reykjavík and ice cave tours. Arctic Adventures charges ISK 70,000 from 1 November 2026 for a guide to drive your sled, and ISK 40,000 on the ice cave tour from Reykjavík.
  • Video and photos: some base camps rent a helmet camera and sell you the footage afterwards. It is optional.
  • The Secret Lagoon: on the Secret Lagoon day the itinerary says the visit is "(own expense)" while a towel is listed as included. Check at checkout whether entry is in your price.
  • Self-drive costs: a rental car and fuel for about 230 km to Gullfoss and back, plus ISK 1,000 to park at Þingvellir if you stop there. Parking at the Gullfoss meeting point is free.
  • Tips: not expected in Iceland. Nobody will ask.

Always included: the overall, gloves, helmet and a buff or balaclava, overshoes on most tours, the briefing and the truck or super jeep up to the ice. What to wear covers what goes under the suit.

Why is the tour from Gullfoss so much cheaper?

Because you drive yourself about 115 km each way to the meeting point. A Reykjavík pickup costs about $110 more per person for the same hour on the ice.

The Gullfoss ride at $251 and the Golden Circle day at $361 put you on the same glacier for the same hour. The difference pays for a coach, a guide and ten hours of someone else driving on winter roads, plus stops at Þingvellir and Geysir. For a couple that gap is about $220, which goes a long way towards a day of car hire and fuel. Couples who already have a car for the week should meet at Gullfoss.

Without a car, the sums flip. Renting one for a single day, then driving two hours each way in the dark of a December morning, saves little and adds the risk. The full trade-off is in Reykjavík or Gullfoss.

No car, no winter driving: the Golden Circle day picks you up in Reykjavík and puts you on the ice for an hour.

Which tour gives the most time driving the snowmobile per dollar?

The solo upgrade and the Glacier Rush. On a shared sled you drive about 30 minutes, so the cheapest tour costs about $8.40 per minute at the handlebar; a solo sled from Gullfoss brings that to about $5.50.

We divided each from-price by the minutes you actually drive: about 30 on a shared sled, 60 on your own. Tours with a lagoon or cave in the price look worse here, and that is fair: you are paying for something else too.

The Glacier Rush runs single-seat 140 hp sleds, so every rider drives and every rider needs a licence, in a group of ten at most; one guest wrote that "we all got to drive our own snowmobile". It is for adults 18 to 80 who have ridden before. Everyone else gets more for their money from the solo upgrade than from a dearer tour.

Is it cheaper to book directly with the operator in kroner?

Usually not. At about ISK 126 to the dollar in late October 2026, the operators' own kroner prices land within a few dollars of Viator, and on several Mountaineers of Iceland tours Viator is lower.

The krona has traded around ISK 124 to 127 per dollar through 2026. Side by side:

Booking through Viator adds free cancellation up to 24 hours before on every tour here and one place to compare reviews. Booking direct can add operator-only trips: Mountaineers of Iceland lists a coach-based Golden Circle and snowmobiling day from ISK 34,999 on its own site. If your card charges a foreign-currency fee, a kroner payment costs you that too.

Is a Langjökull snowmobile tour worth the money?

For most people, yes: the tours rate 4.3 to 5.0 and the complaints are about expectations, not the glacier. Go in knowing the ride is an hour, shared, in a single-file line.

The happy reviews say the same thing in different words. "Whilst expensive (everything in Iceland is!) this was definitely a worthwhile trip", wrote one guest on the Golden Circle day. The unhappy ones mostly expected something else: free riding, a sled each, more speed. A guest on the Gullfoss tour put it bluntly: "it was rather expensive to sit behind an instructor for 40 minutes".

Book it if you want to stand on an ice cap and drive across it for a while, with the views. Skip it, or take the Glacier Rush, if you have ridden snowmobiles in Finland or Canada and want speed. And if the snowmobile is mostly a way to see the glacier, the glacier truck at $191 gets you onto the ice for less, with sledding thrown in.

Frequently asked questions

Do children pay less for snowmobiling on Langjökull?

Several listings have a youth or child band (6 to 16 on the Golden Circle day, 8 to 16 on Snowmobile.is tours), and the price for it shows at checkout. Children ride as passengers, so a family of three may need a solo seat or a shared sled with a parent.

Is the solo rider fee paid at the glacier?

On the Into the Glacier combo, yes: it can only be added on site if a sled is free. Mountaineers of Iceland and Arctic Adventures let you add it when you book, which is safer.

Does a Langjökull snowmobile tour include lunch?

No. Pickup days stop at a café on the way, so bring cash or a card and some snacks. On the Gullfoss and Geysir tours, eat before you meet.

Do prices change with the season?

The Viator from-prices on this site are the 2026 regular prices and move only a little. Direct kroner prices swing in dollars with the exchange rate.
