Natural ice caves are the winter star of Iceland's glaciers, and Langjökull is the one closest to Reykjavík that has them. They are also the least predictable thing you can book: a cave that is perfect in January can be flooded a week later.
This post sets out, as of 30 October 2026, which tours visit a natural cave this winter, what the operators say about the season, and how a natural cave compares with the Into the Glacier tunnel on the west side.
The quick answer
Natural ice caves on Langjökull open with the winter season, from 1 November to mid April. Two tours visit a natural cave: Arctic Adventures' snowmobile and ice cave day and Sleipnir's glacier truck tour from Gullfoss. Last winter's cave was Neptune; guides search for the best cave each autumn, so yours may be a new one. Mountaineers of Iceland's cave is one it built. The Into the Glacier tunnel is man-made, open all year and reached from Húsafell, not Gullfoss.
Which Langjökull tours visit a natural ice cave in winter 2026-27?
Two: the snowmobile and ice cave day by Arctic Adventures (Snowmobile.is), and Sleipnir's ice cave tour by glacier truck from Gullfoss. Last winter both went to the Neptune cave.
The snowmobile and natural ice cave day from Reykjavík is the only tour on our list that combines an hour on a snowmobile with a natural cave. Arctic Adventures, which runs Snowmobile.is, describes the cave stop on its Snowmobile & Neptune Ice Cave Tour page: availability November to April, minimum age 8, and "about 15 minutes" inside.
Sleipnir Tours lists its Ice Cave and Glacier Tour from Gullfoss for 1 November to 15 April, at ISK 24,900 for four hours and from age 4. No snowmobile, no licence. Mountaineers of Iceland also sells a snowmobile and ice cave tour from Gullfoss, but its own page calls it a "newly constructed Glacier Ice Cave, built by Mountaineers". That is a dug cave, not a natural one, even where resellers describe it as newly discovered.
| Tour | Cave | Season (operator) | Snowmobile | Min. age |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snowmobile + ice cave day | Natural | November to April | Yes, about 1 hour | 8 |
| Sleipnir ice cave truck tour | Natural | 1 Nov to 15 April | No | 4 |
| Mountaineers snowmobile + ice cave | Built by the operator | November to June | Yes | 6 |
| Into the Glacier combo | Man-made tunnel | All year | Yes, about 40 min | 8 |
| Into the Glacier tunnel | Man-made tunnel | All year | No | All ages |
What was the Neptune ice cave, and will you see it this winter?
Neptune is the natural meltwater cave north of Gullfoss that both operators visited in 2025-26, with clear blue ice streaked with grey volcanic ash. Guides search for the best cave each autumn, so 2026-27 may bring a new one.
Sleipnir explains the name in its season announcement: the blue of its ice looks like the Neptune gemstone. Arctic Adventures writes of "intensely blue crystal ice with remarkable clarity, streaked with delicate grey ash lines from centuries of volcanic eruptions". According to Guide to Iceland, glacier guides found it in the autumn of 2025 and it opened to visitors that winter. Both operators still use the name on their pages, but natural caves change every year and guides pick the safest, best cave each autumn. Book the tour, not a specific cave.
Guests on the ice cave day last winter liked it. "The ice cave was beautiful, located this year by our own guides," wrote Molly in March 2026. There is no road to it and no way in without a tour, so do not plan to drive there yourself.

When are natural ice caves open, and why can they close at short notice?
From about 1 November to mid April, and only on days when the guides judge the cave safe. Rain, thaw and meltwater can shut it with little warning.
Summer meltwater carves the passages; winter freezes them solid. In Sleipnir's words, "When winter returns, the water refreezes, stabilizing the caves just long enough for exploration." The same cave can look different by February: "The entrance may shift, passages may become wider or narrower", and "Tours operate only when the weather, roads, glacier and cave are considered safe."
Closures happen. Mountaineers of Iceland, replying to a guest, said a cave closes "immediately" when it is unsafe "due to flooding or structural changes", and its own page offers a partial refund when the cave part is cancelled. A guest on that tour in October 2026 wrote that they "couldn't do the ice cave portion due to safety concerns". The snowmobile ride still ran. If the cave is the reason you are going, book early in your trip so a closed day still leaves room for another try.
| Month | Natural cave | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Early November | Season opens 1 November | First trips, cave freshly checked |
| December to February | Most reliable | Short days, coldest and most stable ice |
| March | Usually open | More light, thaw days begin |
| 1 to 15 April | Last weeks (Sleipnir to 15 April) | Wetter, more closures |
| Mid April to October | Closed | Into the Glacier tunnel only |

Pick the natural cave for raw blue ice in winter. Pick the tunnel if you travel outside winter, bring young children, or want a sure thing.
The Into the Glacier tunnel took 14 months to dig and opened on 1 June 2015. It runs about 500 metres into the ice and up to 25 metres below the surface, with LED lighting since 2024, according to Arctic Adventures. It is on the west side of the glacier and the tours start at Húsafell. None of the Gullfoss or Geysir snowmobile tours goes there.
The natural cave is wilder and shorter: a quarter of an hour, crampons, wet floors, low ceilings in places. The tunnel is a guided walk of about an hour in a lit corridor. If you want a snowmobile and the tunnel on the same day, the Into the Glacier combo is the only way, with about 40 minutes on the snowmobile rather than the usual hour. Our ice tunnel or ice cave guide compares them in more detail.
| Natural cave | Into the Glacier tunnel | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Meltwater | People, opened 2015 |
| Season | About 1 November to mid April | All year |
| Side of the glacier | East, from Gullfoss or Geysir | West, from Húsafell |
| Time inside | About 15 minutes | About 1 hour |
| Closes at short notice | Yes, when unsafe | Rarely |

Does the red glacier truck tour visit an ice cave?
Not on paper. Sleipnir sells the red truck sledding trip and the ice cave trip as two tours, and its own site dates them to different seasons.
The red glacier monster truck tour lists sledding and glacier golf, weather permitting, plus hot chocolate on the ice. On Sleipnir's own site that tour runs from 16 April to 31 October, and the ice cave tour takes over from 1 November to 15 April. Check what the date you pick on the listing includes before you book.
Some late-season guests got lucky. "As a wonderful surprise, we even got the opportunity to go inside an ice cave," wrote Nadja in October 2026. A surprise is not a promise. If the cave is the point, book a tour that lists it.
