Sleipnir Tours · Langjökull east side, from Gullfoss
Sleipnir Tours drives you from Gullfoss onto Langjökull in a giant eight-wheeled truck, then stops on the ice for sledding, glacier golf and hot chocolate. There's no snowmobile and no licence needed, which makes it the glacier trip for small children, grandparents and anyone who'd rather be driven.

Sleipnir is a family-run company with custom eight-wheeled glacier trucks, painted red, that seat a full group in comfortable chairs with big windows, Wi-Fi and a toilet on board. A highland bus collects you at the upper Gullfoss car park at 12:30, and the truck takes over for the climb onto Langjökull, about 45 to 50 minutes from the pickup.
On the ice there are usually two stops. Weather permitting, you go sledding on saucers, hit a golf ball off the glacier, and drink hot chocolate (with an optional shot of Jökla liqueur) with kleinur, the Icelandic twisted doughnut. Crampons are provided for walking. Reviewers talk about drinking meltwater from crevasses and a driver who has been on the glacier for over 20 years.
The season matters. Sleipnir's own site runs the red truck tour with sledding and golf from 16 April to 31 October, and an ice cave and glacier tour from November to mid-April; winter guests on this listing report a natural ice cave visit instead of, or as well as, the games. Bad weather can cancel at short notice, with a new date or a refund. And again: there is no snowmobile on this trip. If you want to drive, see the Gullfoss snowmobile tour, which leaves from the same car park.
Upper Gullfoss car park, opposite Gullfosskaffi. Look for the Sleipnir sign, 15 minutes before the 12:30 departure.
Highland bus, then the monster truck onto the ice, with the guide's stories on the way.
Crampons on, a walk on the ice, sledding and glacier golf, then hot chocolate and kleinur. In winter, a natural ice cave.
The truck and bus bring you down to the car park, about four hours after you left.
★★★★★Ideal for families, the trip was two stops after about 45 minutes getting to the glacier from the pickup point. The second stop was excellent for the children as they all had the opportunity to go sledging on the glacier.
★★★★★If you are a family with kids, and don't have the energy and time to hike, this is perfect for you. This super monster bus will take you safely up the glacier. And once you are up there, you get to experience the magnificent view, and play golf.
★★★★★We were able to check out a small ice cave, hang out on the glacier, and even did a bit of sledding! There was no hot chocolate, but my kids didn't notice, so it was ok.
★★★★★Going out on a glacier with no one around, the scenery is like another world. They offer self drive ski mobile tours but I much prefer someone else driving onto the ice.
