Booking choice: The Into the Glacier combo, from $314 per person. Check dates Tour details
The famous ice tunnel, Into the Glacier, was dug into the west side of Langjökull and opened in 2015. It is reached from Húsafell. The snowmobile tours from Gullfoss and Geysir ride the east side of the same ice cap and never go near it.
On the east side, some tours stop at a natural ice cave instead, in winter, when the guides find a safe one. This guide sorts out which tour gives you which.
The quick answer
Only one snowmobile tour includes the Into the Glacier tunnel: the combo from Húsafell ($314, 3 hours, ages 8+, about 40 minutes on the snowmobile). For a natural ice cave, book the snowmobile and ice cave trip from Reykjavík ($387, 10 hours), which runs November to April. The Gullfoss, Geysir and Golden Circle snowmobile tours are a ride only. The tunnel is open all year; natural caves are winter only and change every season.

What is the difference between the ice tunnel and an ice cave?
The Into the Glacier tunnel is man-made, lit and open all year on the west side. A natural ice cave is formed by meltwater, unlit, found new each winter and visited only from November to April.

Check dates for the Into the Glacier comboDo Langjökull snowmobile tours go into the Into the Glacier tunnel?
Only the combo from Húsafell does. The tours from Gullfoss, Geysir and Reykjavík ride the east side and do not visit the tunnel.
This trips people up because everything is called Langjökull. The tunnel entrance is high on the west of the ice cap, and Arctic Adventures runs both the tunnel and the Into the Glacier combo from the Húsafell activity centre, next to the bistro and petrol station. You check in there, ride a bus and a glacier truck up, walk the tunnel, then ride a snowmobile for about 40 minutes, roughly 20 each way, with two people per sled.
One guest described the order: a truck takes you "onto the glacier where you put on crampons to explore the tunnels with your guide", then on to the snowmobiles. Allow about four hours on site plus two hours each way from Reykjavík by car. The combo costs ISK 38,900 direct, against $314 on Viator.

The only tour here that rides Langjökull and walks inside it: snowmobile plus the 500-metre ice tunnel, from Húsafell.
Explore the Into the Glacier combo Tour detailsWhat is it like inside the Into the Glacier ice tunnel?
A one-hour guided walk through about 500 metres of tunnels, up to 25 metres below the surface, at around 0°C all year. Crampons are provided.
The tunnel took 14 months to dig and opened on 1 June 2015; in places the ice is 30 to 35 years old. Into the Glacier says the temperature stays at about 0°C in every season and calls it an easy one-hour walk with stops. There is a small chapel, and guides sometimes turn off the lights and sing. One guest wrote: "He sang a wonderful song for us with all the lights turned off allowing us to experience complete darkness".
The floor is wet in places. A guest on the combo warned: "be prepared to zig zag around the falling water". Claustrophobic? Guests who are say they managed, and guides let you head back if you need to.

Which snowmobile tour goes to a natural ice cave?
The snowmobile and natural ice cave trip with Snowmobile.is, from Reykjavík ($387, 10 hours). Arctic Adventures runs it November to April, when the guides have found a safe cave.
The ice cave day: you ride out on the snowmobile, stop at the cave for about 15 minutes, then ride back. The cave changes every winter: for 2026-27 Arctic Adventures says its guides found the Neptune Ice Cave in October 2026. A guest in March wrote that the cave was "located this year by our own guides".
The listing gives you the hour on the snowmobile plus about 15 minutes in the cave, but on a slow day the riding can feel short. One guest felt the ride was "much less than an hour because of the time taken at the ice cave", and another, on a big group day, found that "not everyone fits inside at the same time". Go for the cave because you want to see one, not to add to the ride. The ice caves post follows this season.

A natural blue ice cave and an hour on the snowmobile, with pickup in Reykjavík. November to April.
Check dates for the snowmobile and ice cave dayDo the Gullfoss and Geysir tours ever visit an ice cave?
Not the standard rides. Mountaineers of Iceland sells a separate Gullfoss tour to an ice cave it built itself, and only the Snowmobile.is ice cave tour visits a natural one.
Mountaineers of Iceland runs its own snowmobile and ice cave tour from Gullfoss, from ISK 37,400 at 14:00 between November and June. That cave is man-made by the company, closer to a small version of the tunnel than to a blue meltwater cave. Guests on the Gullfoss tours who mention "the ice cave" in their reviews were most likely there. On the standard Gullfoss ride and the ride from Geysir, expect the hour on the snowmobile and nothing else.
Sleipnir works by season. Its red glacier truck with sledding and glacier golf runs from mid-April to October; from November to mid-April it runs an ice cave and glacier tour to a natural cave instead. Check which one your date falls in.
Can you visit the ice tunnel without a snowmobile?
Yes. The Into the Glacier tour from Húsafell ($211) takes a glacier truck to the tunnel with no snowmobile, no licence and no age limit.
The ice tunnel tour runs about four hours from Húsafell, with roughly an hour inside. It suits families with small children and anyone without a licence. There is no transfer from Reykjavík on this listing, so you drive to Húsafell; Into the Glacier also sells a version from Reykjavík for ISK 38,990.
A family who later wanted the snowmobile too wrote: "can't wait for the kids to get older so we can do the snowmobile experience on a later trip!"

Explore the ice tunnel tour Tour detailsWhich should you choose: tunnel, cave or just the ride?
Tunnel if you want the inside of a glacier any month; cave if you are here in winter and want natural blue ice; ride only if the hour on the snowmobile is the point.
- Staying in West Iceland or driving the Ring Road north: the Húsafell combo. Two experiences in three hours.
- Winter, based in Reykjavík, no car: the snowmobile and ice cave day.
- Doing the Golden Circle: a ride only from Gullfoss, or meet the tour at Geysir, then the tunnel another day if you want it.
- Kids under 8: the tunnel without a snowmobile, or the glacier truck from age 4, April to October.
One family weighing the truck against the tunnel wrote: "We were going back and forth between this tour and the man made Ice Tunnel and we're happy with our decision." Both are good days. Which one you book should depend on where you are sleeping.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Into the Glacier tunnel a real ice cave?
It is a man-made tunnel dug into the glacier in 2014-15, not a natural cave. It is lit, has a walkway and stays open all year.
Is the ice tunnel open in summer?
Yes, all year. The temperature inside stays around 0°C in every season, so dress warm even in July.
When are natural ice caves open on Langjökull?
From about November to April, when the ice is cold and stable. The guides find a new cave each autumn, and visits depend on conditions.
Do I need a licence for the ice tunnel?
Not for the tunnel itself. On the snowmobile combo, the driver of each sled needs a valid driver's licence; passengers from age 8 need none.
