Arctic Adventures · Húsafell, west side of Langjökull
A glacier truck takes you from Húsafell onto Langjökull and drops you at the entrance of a 500-metre tunnel carved into the ice, where a guide walks you through blue corridors for about an hour. There's no snowmobile and no age limit, so it's the way inside the glacier for families and anyone without a licence.

Into the Glacier opened in 2015 after 14 months of digging: a tunnel about 500 metres long, up to 25 metres below the surface of Langjökull, with lit corridors, a chapel and layers of ice that fell as snow decades ago. It's on the west side of the glacier, above Húsafell, and no snowmobile tour from Gullfoss or Geysir goes there.
From Húsafell a bus and then a glacier monster truck (a converted 8x8) carry you up past year markers that show how far the ice has retreated. At the tunnel mouth you put on crampons, and a guide leads you through for about an hour, explaining how glaciers form and move. Guides often sing in the chapel with the lights off. It's about 0°C inside, all year, and the floor is wet.
The tour takes about four hours from Húsafell and has no transfer from Reykjavík on this listing, so you need a car. Groups are 25 at most. If you also want to drive a snowmobile, the combo tour adds a ride for about $100 more, from age 8.
At the Húsafell information centre. There's a bistro and toilets on site.
Bus to base camp, then the glacier monster truck onto Langjökull.
Crampons on, then a guided walk through the corridors, the blue ice and the chapel.
The truck and bus return you to the meeting point, around four hours in all.
★★★★★We had a wonderful time exploring the ice tunnel. We spent about half an hour driving up the glacier and then an hour in the ice tunnel.
★★★★★The ice cave was fun but what really blew me away was the views we were lucky to go on a clear day with little wind and could see forever. [...] I am a little claustrophobic but was fine down there. They are very kind and allow you to head back whenever you want to.
★★★★★The visit at 10am with the ride from/to Húsafell is perfectly timed for a half-day activity, which will leave some time for hiking or sightseeing in the area after the visit
