Mountaineers of Iceland · Langjökull east side, base camp below the glacier
You drive yourself to the upper car park at Gullfoss, ride a monster truck up to the Mountaineers of Iceland base camp, and spend about an hour on a snowmobile shared with one other person. It's the cheapest way onto Langjökull, as long as you have a car and the nerve for a winter road.

Mountaineers of Iceland has run snowmobile tours on Langjökull since 1996, and this is its simplest one. You meet the crew at the upper Gullfoss car park, outside the restaurant, 15 minutes before departure. Parking is free, guests report. A big-wheeled ice truck then takes you up the highland track to base camp, a ride of roughly 40 minutes that some reviewers enjoyed as much as the sled.
At base camp you get a winter suit, gloves, helmet, buff and overshoes, a short lesson, and then about one hour on the glacier in a single line behind a guide. Two people share each machine and swap at the halfway stop. Riding alone costs extra, and so does a staff driver if nobody in your pair has a licence. Both are listed as exclusions on Viator.
This listing has the lowest rating of the snowmobile tours here, 4.3, and the reasons are consistent: groups of up to 50, a slow procession on busy days, and kit that is not always in top shape. A 2026 reviewer rode half the trip with a visor that wouldn't stay up. Check your helmet and the heated grips before you leave base camp. On a clear afternoon guests rave about the sunset over the ice, and the price, $251, is hard to beat. If you'd rather not drive, compare the Golden Circle day with pickup.
Park at the upper Gullfoss car park and find the Mountaineers of Iceland crew outside the restaurant.
The ice truck climbs the highland track towards Langjökull. Guests report it can lurch and slide in deep snow.
Winter suit, gloves, helmet, buff and overshoes, then how to steer, brake and keep your distance.
Follow the guide in a line across the ice cap, stop halfway for photos and swap drivers.
The truck brings you back down to the car park, about four hours after you met.
★★★★★Drove to Gulfoss waterfall meeting point. Seemless, fun transfer on the monster bus to the glacier. Unique experience with fantastic views whilst on the glacier. Worth taking drinks and snacks as roughly an hour to the base camp and back again.
★★★★★The meeting point is easy to find and has free parking. We loved the experience!! They include all the equipment necessary for the weather.
★★★★★Well organized, warm and comfortable gear, clear instructions on how to operate the snowmobile, and stunning views - we got the sunset!
★★★★★We had a white out snow fall with very limited visibility on our ride and it was still one of the high lights of our trip to Iceland because of him.

About one hour on the glacier, shared by two people who swap halfway. The whole trip from the Gullfoss car park and back takes around four hours, including the truck ride up and down.
About 115 km, usually close to two hours by car in winter. Mountaineers of Iceland asks you to be at the upper car park 15 minutes before departure, so leave Reykjavík in good time. Our Reykjavík or Gullfoss guide compares the drive with a pickup tour.
Yes, for an extra solo fee. The price on Viator assumes two people per snowmobile. If you don't have a driver's licence, you ride as a passenger or pay for a staff member to drive.
No. The tunnel is on the west side of Langjökull, near Húsafell, and only the Into the Glacier combo pairs it with a snowmobile ride.
