Licence, ages & passengers

Driving a snowmobile across Langjökull takes a normal car licence and nothing more. Here is who can take the handlebar, who rides behind, and what to do when nobody in your party has a licence.

Iceland has no special snowmobile licence. What every operator on Langjökull asks for is the ordinary driving licence you use for a car, held by whoever sits at the front. Passengers need nothing at all, which is how children and travellers without a licence end up on the ice.

The rules differ in the details: the age to drive, the age to ride, how many children per adult and what a solo sled costs. They are set by the three operators behind the tours on this site: Mountaineers of Iceland, Arctic Adventures (which runs Snowmobile.is and Into the Glacier) and Reykjavik Excursions.

The quick answer

You need a valid driver's licence to drive a snowmobile in Iceland; passengers need none. Drivers must be 17 with Arctic Adventures and 18 with Mountaineers of Iceland. Passengers can be 6 with Mountaineers of Iceland and Reykjavik Excursions, and 8 with Arctic Adventures. With no licence in your party, ride as a passenger next to someone who has one, or pay for a staff driver: ISK 70,000 with Arctic Adventures from November 2026.

Do you need a driver's licence to drive a snowmobile in Iceland?

Yes. Every operator on Langjökull requires a valid driver's licence to drive the snowmobile. Passengers do not need one.

The Reykjavik Excursions listing puts it most clearly: "A valid driver's license is required to operate a snowmobile (ride along passengers do not require one)". Snowmobile.is, Mountaineers of Iceland and Into the Glacier all say the same on their own pages. No snowmobile experience is needed; the guides teach you the throttle, the brake and how to lean in about ten minutes at base camp.

There is no separate snowmobile permit for visitors, and no test. You sign a waiver and confirm you hold a licence. One exception to the passenger rule: the Glacier Rush uses single-seat sleds, so every rider drives and every rider needs a licence.

Which licences are accepted, and do you have to show it?

A full, valid car licence from your home country. A motorcycle licence alone is not accepted, and a learner's permit is not a full licence.

  • Car licence from abroad: fine. The operators ask for a valid licence and none of them mentions an international driving permit.
  • Motorcycle only: Arctic Adventures says a motorcycle licence alone is not accepted, and Snowmobile.is asks for a driving licence.
  • Learner's permit: not a full licence, so you ride as a passenger.
  • Showing it: Mountaineers of Iceland says in its FAQ that you don't need the physical card; you confirm on the consent form. Other base camps may ask to see it. Bring it.

Can you go snowmobiling without a driver's licence?

Yes, as a passenger behind someone who has one. Mountaineers of Iceland asks that at least half of a group holds a licence, and Reykjavik Excursions needs one driver per two people booked.

The rule is about sled maths. Two people share each snowmobile, so each sled needs one licensed driver. Reykjavik Excursions writes on the Golden Circle day: "At least 1 driver is required per 2 persons booked on this tour". A couple where only one person drives is fine; that person just drives the whole hour.

Nervous drivers do this by choice. One guest on the Gullfoss tour planned to swap with her husband at halfway and gave up within minutes: "I realized less than 3 minutes in I was too much of a scaredy cat to drive that fast so I let him drive the whole time, which I think was wise!"

What if nobody in your group has a licence?

Book a staff driver, or pick a glacier tour with no snowmobile. A guide driving your sled costs ISK 70,000 with Arctic Adventures from 1 November 2026, about $555.

Arctic Adventures lists the extra guide at ISK 70,000 per sled from 1 November 2026 (ISK 40,000 on the ice cave tour); the Snowmobile.is and Mountaineers of Iceland listings mark an "extra snowmobile staff to drive" as an extra cost. It suits a solo traveller without a licence, or a parent who wants a guide to take a child.

For less, go up on the ice without a snowmobile. The red glacier monster truck from Gullfoss ($191) drives you onto Langjökull for sledding and hot chocolate, from age 4, between mid-April and October; in winter Sleipnir runs an ice cave and glacier tour instead. The Into the Glacier ice tunnel ($211) takes you 500 metres inside the ice with no age limit. Neither needs a licence.

How old do you have to be to drive or ride a snowmobile on Langjökull?

To drive: 17 with Arctic Adventures and Reykjavik Excursions, 18 with Mountaineers of Iceland. To ride as a passenger: 6 or 8, depending on the operator.

Snowmobile.is adds that children ride "in company with a guardian"; Mountaineers of Iceland says only one child is allowed per adult. Two parents with three children need a third adult.

Can children go snowmobiling in Iceland?

Yes, as passengers from age 6 or 8, sitting behind a parent who drives. Small children find a full hour in the cold hard work.

Guests bring children all the time. "Myself, my husband and our 6 year old son had the most amazing experience", wrote one family on the Gullfoss tour. Another parent was glad they left their six-year-old at home on a stormy April day: "Weather was pretty harsh, and don't think he would have been able to hang on for the hour on the snowmobile."

The suits come in children's sizes. What makes the difference is the weather and the child's grip. For under-6s, or children who hate the cold, the glacier truck with its sledding is the better day; one family called it "Ideal for kids". Teenagers ride behind a parent until they can drive: one mother's son plans to come back "when he is 18 and has a drivers licence to have a go himself!"

How much is it to ride a snowmobile on your own?

Roughly ISK 6,000 to 10,000 more than a shared seat, about $50 to $80. On the Into the Glacier combo it can only be added on site.

Arctic Adventures charges ISK 10,000 per solo rider on its Geysir and Reykjavík rides and ISK 6,000 on the ice cave tour. On Mountaineers of Iceland tours you add the single-rider option when you book; guests report about $80. Travelling alone? You will be paired with another solo guest unless you pay the fee, and you need your own licence to take a sled. The full cost breakdown is in the price guide.

Drive the whole hour yourself: add the solo option to the ride from Gullfoss when you book.

Is driving a snowmobile hard, and who should not drive?

It is easy to start and harder to steer than people expect. Pregnant travellers, and anyone with back or heart problems, should not ride at all.

You press a thumb throttle to go and let go to slow down; a hand brake does the rest. Steering takes muscle, more on soft snow. "It was harder to control than I expected", wrote one first-timer on the Golden Circle day. Most groups ride in a single line at a pace the slowest driver can manage, and guides will move nervous drivers towards the back so nobody feels pushed.

Mountaineers of Iceland strongly advises pregnant women not to ride, because the base camp is far from the nearest hospital, and most listings say the same for back and heart problems. Falls happen at low speed into soft snow. If speed is the point, the Glacier Rush is the only tour built for it, for licensed adults 18 to 80.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an international driving permit to drive a snowmobile in Iceland?

The operators ask only for a valid driver's licence and none of them mentions an international permit. A full car licence from home is what counts.

Can a 16-year-old drive a snowmobile on Langjökull?

No. The youngest drivers are 17, with a full licence, on Arctic Adventures and Reykjavik Excursions tours; Mountaineers of Iceland requires 18. Younger teenagers ride as passengers.

Can I drive if I only have a motorcycle licence?

No. Arctic Adventures states that a motorcycle licence alone is not accepted; you need a car driving licence.

Is there a maximum age for snowmobiling?

Not on the standard tours, though you need the fitness to hold on for an hour. The Glacier Rush takes adults from 18 to 80.
